China plays a vital role in the global net-zero transition, given its share in global CO2 emissions and its leadership in low carbon technology innovation and market deployment. China is also the country where most aggressive steps are being taken to enable energy transition, under the government's "1+N" policy framework. However, the complexities of China's energy transition are hard to understand, especially for those outside China.
2022 was the year when most of China's 14th five-year blueprints were published. Throughout the year, three senior members of the Beijing Energy Club and senior research fellow of the PKU Energy Institute – Xavier Chen, Changhua Wu and Yongping Zhai, decided to "decode" China's energy transition through weekly English reports, each focusing on one subject.
These reports together, as the IEA Executive Director Dr. Fatih Birol said, "provide a highly comprehensive and detailed picture of what's going on in the world's largest energy market, greatly improving the transparency on the grand transition China is undertaking".
Please find the compilation of these reports under the title of "Decoding China's Energy Transition" as attached.
