CEM11 and MI-5 Ministerial Meeting and Energy Week Inbound Broadcast Preview

       The 11th Annual Clean Energy Ministerial (CEM11) and the 5th Ministerial Meeting on Innovation Missions (MI-5) will be held on September 22 and 23, 2020, respectively. Hosted by the Saudi Ministry of Energy and themed "Supporting Economic Recovery - Shaping a Clean Future," CEM11 and MI-5 will be held in conjunction with the Group of Twenty (G20) Energy Ministers' Meeting, the most important government ministerial summit on clean energy in the world in the fall of 2020.

        

The Clean Energy Ministerial Cooperation Mechanism (CEM) was established in 2010 as a joint initiative of China and twenty-three other major economies. Since 2010, member countries have taken turns to host the annual ministerial meeting as the presidency, which is now in its eleventh year. The Innovation Mission Ministerial Cooperation Mechanism (MI) was launched in 2015 and has been co-hosting the annual ministerial meeting with CEM every year since 2016. China has launched several clean energy initiatives and actions with other major economies in the world under the CEM and MI multilateral cooperation mechanism, including initiating and leading the Electric Vehicles Initiative (EVI), the Regional and Global Energy Interconnection Initiative), the Power System Flexibility Campaign, the Smart Grid Innovation Challenge, and the Sustainable Biofuels Innovation Challenge. Sustainable Biofuels Innovation Challenge (SBIIC). China is also an active participant in several CEM and MI international clean energy initiatives, including the 21st Century Power Partnership (21CPP), the Scaling Up Ultra-Efficient Appliances and Devices (SEAD), the Energy Management Working Group (EMWG), the Carbon Capture Utilization and Storage Initiative (CCUS), the International Smart Grid Action Network (ISGAN), the Photochemical Conversion Innovation Challenge, the Green Hydrogen Energy Innovation Challenge, the Green Hydrogen Innovation Challenge, and the C3E Women's Empowerment and Education and Equity Initiative, which will be joined soon. During CEM11, China will join other member countries in launching a Drive to Zero initiative to promote zero emissions from commercial and heavy-duty vehicles globally.

      In the lead-up to this year's 11th Annual Clean Energy Ministerial (CEM11) and 5th Ministerial Meeting on Innovation Mission (MI-5), there will be 21 Energy Week events featuring government ministers of energy, climate, science and technology, industry and environmental ecology from major global economies and energy business leaders focusing on the role of clean energy in supporting rapid economic recovery and sustainable development in the post-COVID-19 era, and the role of the Clean Energy Community in shaping the future of clean energy. Due to the impact of the new crown epidemic, the 11th Annual Clean Energy Ministerial and the 4th Innovation Mission Ministerial will, for the first time, be video-streamed and open to the global public.

       The Clean Energy Ministerial (CEM) is the world's only permanent multilateral cooperation mechanism at the ministerial level in the clean energy sector. Its goal is to bring together the G20, as well as countries with clean energy leadership, large companies and international experts, to organize coordinated national action through policy and best practice sharing to propose The goal of the CEM is to promote a global transition to a clean energy economy by sharing policies and best practices, organizing coordinated action across countries, and proposing dedicated clean energy initiatives and actions. CEM's full membership currently includes China, Australia, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Denmark, the European Union, Finland, France, Germany, Indonesia, India, Italy, Japan, Mexico, New Zealand, the Netherlands, Norway, Korea, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Spain, Sweden, the United Arab Emirates, the United Kingdom, the United States, a total of 26 countries and the European Union. All member countries account for 90% of the total global clean energy production and 80% of the total global clean energy investment. The Clean Energy Ministerial Partnership also has several international organizations as observers to provide policy advice to member countries in the clean energy sector, including the International Energy Agency (IEA), the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), the World Energy Council (WEC), the World Bank, and the World Bank. "Mission Innovation (MI) is a global collaborative mechanism for clean energy launched at the 2015 United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP21) to "catalyze investment in clean energy science and technology and to act as a bridge between research-government-business-capital to accelerate clean energy innovation" in support of the Paris Agreement to limit global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius. MI is a global cooperative mechanism in the clean energy sector launched at COP21 in 2015 to "promote investment in clean energy science and technology and to serve as a bridge between research-government-business-capital to accelerate clean energy innovation" and to contribute to the Paris Agreement to limit global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius. The mechanism currently consists of 25 members, including 24 countries and the European Union. 24 member countries are China, Australia, Austria, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Morocco, Norway, South Korea, Saudi Arabia, Sweden, the Netherlands, the United Arab Emirates, the United Kingdom, and the United States. The MI member organizations account for 58% of the world's population, 70% of the world's GDP, and 80% of the world's government investment in clean energy research and development. MI also works closely with international organizations such as the International Energy Agency (IEA), International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), Breakthrough Energy Coalition (BEC), Global Covenant of Mayors for Climate and Energy (GCoM), World Bank Group (WBG), and World Economic Forum (WEF).
