ICCG-17 International Conference on Gas Geochemistry 2026
Xi’an, China, 11-17 September 2026
Second Circular (Update)
The International Conference on Gas Geochemistry (ICGG) is an international forum where the latest research and technological advances related to gas geochemistry are presented and discussed. This is the 17thmeeting of the ICGG series which started in 1982 to unite experts in gas geochemistry, working on various geological and environmental issues. The objective of the ICGG-17, which is to be held in Xi’an, Shaanxi Province, China, is to promote international and interdisciplinary exchange of information, to foster co-operation among researchers in academia, research institutes, private companies, and industry, and to stimulate growth and advances in the field of gas geochemistry.
About Xi'an:
Xi’an is a major city in Northwest China and one of the oldest cities in the country, having served as the capital of thirteen ancient Chinese dynasties. As the eastern starting point of the ancient Silk Road, Xi’an holds a unique place in Chinese history and culture. The city is best known for the Terracotta Warriors, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, as well as other historical landmarks such as the Ancient City Wall and the Big Wild Goose Pagoda. In addition to its rich cultural heritage, Xi’an is renowned for its distinctive local cuisine, shaped by centuries of cultural exchange along the Silk Road.
Today, Xi’an is a modern, well-connected city with a strong academic and research environment, offering an ideal setting for international academic exchange.
Iconic Attractions and Traditional Food in Xi’an
Conference Theme:
The theme of ICGG-17 will be "Gas Geochemistry and Carbon Neutrality under Multi-Sphere Interactions." This conference will explore the interactions between various Earth spheres (atmosphere, lithosphere, hydrosphere, and biosphere) and their influence on gas geochemistry, with a particular focus on the role of gases in the global carbon cycle. The theme will also address how these interactions can contribute to understanding and advancing carbon neutrality goals.
Scientific issues including but not limited to (ICGG-17):
1. Gases in volcanic systems
2. Gases in seismic and tectonic settings
3. Deep and high maturated gases in sedimentary basins
4. Abiotic gas under multi-sphere interactions
5. Gases in geothermal exploration and exploitation
6. Searching for hidden H2 reservoirs
7. Environmental and health impact of gaseous emissions
8. Helium in different geological scenarios
9. Gas-biota interactions
10. Advances in gas measurements and techniques
11. Gas industry application technology
Date and Venue
The conference will take place in Xi`an, Shaanxi Province, China, at the Shaanxi Guesthouse Conference Center on September11-17, 2026 (including a field trip). Accommodations are arranged in Shaanxi Guesthouse. These venues offer comfortable lodging options close to the conference location.
Agenda
ICGG-17 will start with an ice-breaker session following registration during the late afternoon and early evening of Friday11thSeptember, 2026.
We foresee 3 days of oral and poster sessions (Saturday to Monday) with a daily on-site lunch-break and various social events. Each day will feature an invited Keynote Lecture.
September 11, 2026 (Friday): On-site registration and conference icebreaker (evening)
September 12-14, 2026 (Saturday-Monday): Conference sessions (3 days)
September 15-17, 2026 (Tuesday-Thursday): Conference fieldtrips (optional)
Field trips:
A field trip is proposed to explore helium system in the Weihe Basin including the basement granite outcrops and geothermal-associated drilling, as well as the natural gas system in the Ordos Basin including the main source rocks of Triassic oil shale and Carboniferous-Permian coal measures, which are the main sources of the conventional and unconventional oil and gases. We will also have chance to visit bauxite outcrops in the same day, which is recognized a source of helium gases in natural gas accumulations. The detailed field trip instruction will come in detail in the following circulars.
(a) Granite outcrops in the Mount Hua at the southern margin of the Weihe Basin; (b–c) bauxite and oil shale outcrops in the interior of the Weihe Basin.
